Easy beginner project

Solid wood coaster

Four strips, two crosspieces, and a calm finish: a manageable first project for a mug, glass, or small pot.

Materials and tools

  • 4 solid wood strips, each 18 cm long
  • 2 narrow crosspieces, each 12 cm long
  • Wood glue and 120- and 240-grit sandpaper
  • Food-safe hard-wax oil and two clamps

Three steps

Four wooden strips and two crosspieces aligned at right angles
1. Align the strips, mark both crosspieces underneath, and dry-fit everything.
The coaster held with two clamps while the glue dries
2. Apply a thin layer of glue, square the assembly, and clamp until completely dry.
A thin coat of hard-wax oil applied to the wooden strips with a cloth
3. Ease the edges, sand with the grain, and apply a thin coat of hard-wax oil.
